Ali is fresh out of the academy while Gilou is an old dog who treads close to the line, often crossing it, whenever he’s on a major case. When police commissioner Herville and a second victim are shot dead in a Chinese restaurant, detective Gilles ‘Gilou’ Escoffier (Thierry Godard) and his new partner Ali Amrani, played by Tewfik Jallab, begin an investigation. Once described as the French version of The Wire, it’s not quite as gritty but it does draw together elements of police procedural and legal drama to excellent effect with classy production values. Here’s an old and rather blurry trailer for season 1.We’ve got good news for lovers of the French crime drama Spiral, with the announcement that season seven is coming to BBC Four this autumn. Spiral ( Engrenages) is currently streaming on Hulu. ![]() This series hasn’t kept going for such a long time by being bad. The twists and turns of the story are well done and keep you interested. It’s interesting to see the story of a crime from more than just the cop’s point of view. Overall, however, the series is definitely a well-done mystery series. The same applies to the fact that the only kind of backstory they could come up with for the main character was her penchant for one-night stands. More women behind the camera would have helped.
